Square Enix shutting down Final Fantasy multiplayer game

Final Fantasy 7 The First Soldier is already being shut down by Square Enix, barely a year after it was released. Happy days.

Final Fantasy 7 The First Soldier was announced in February 2021 and is a free-to-play first-person battle royale shooter. Later that year, the battle royale adaptation was released in November on mobile devices.

It’s dead, already?!

However, within a year after it was released, Square Enix announced that it was shutting the game down. Some fans had hoped that the battle royale would finally make its way to PC and consoles. However, any hope of that ever happening is officially dead.

To be fair to the battle royale, it wasn’t the worst-received game we’d ever seen. According to Metacritic, it had a score of 62. Sure, it’s not a great score. Being somewhat optimistic, it can at least be considered above average. Unfortunately, the above-average status wasn’t enough for Square Enix to keep this game alive.

When will Final Fantasy 7 The First Soldier end?

Square Enix has detailed in a blog post that the battle royale shooter will be killed off on January 11th, 2023.

What happens until then?

As of right now, the in-game currency “Shinra Credits” have been removed, so you won’t be able to spend real-world money. However, you are still able to spend any remaining credits you have until support for the game ends.

What else should we know?

Support for non-English language will end on November 1st, 2022. At this point, only text will be displayed in English. Which is a shame for those that might not speak English.

Furthermore, Square Enix has also stated that it will continue to support the title with in-game events until it closes. Previously the game was supported with events that featured classic PS1 skins and they looked awesome.

At least we have Final Fantasy 7 remake part 2!

In more positive news, earlier this year part two of the Final Fantasy 7 remake was announced and we’re even getting a full remake of PSP classic, Crisis Core!
