The CEO of Take-Two Interactive, parent company of Rockstar Games, has stated that he believes video games will one day “look exactly like live-action.”
CEO Strauss Zelnick revealed his thoughts on the future of the video game industry when speaking during a UBS Global TMT Virtual Conference.
When Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption 2 released in 2018, even without PC mods, it wowed fans with its realism and is still heralded as one of the best looking games of its generation.
The vast open-world of RDR2 with its own eco-system, highly quality animations and lighting effects pushed the bar for the previous generation, but it can go even further according to Zelnick.
During the conference, Zelnick spoke about how he believes video game technology will advance over the next ten years.
“I’m guessing [Take-Two’s] business in ten years looks very different than it does today in the same way it looks very different today than it did ten years ago when there was no mobile business and no recurrent consumer spending,” said Zelnick.
He continued: “And I can’t quite say what that will involve, but I think what you’re going to see is technology will allow our creative folks to do things they’ve never been able to do before, including make games that look exactly like live-action.“
Although it’s yet to be officially announced, we all know that GTA 6 is coming even without the quite humorous “dirt road” tease. It’s quite exciting to imagine how good it will run and look on new-gen systems.
Until then, we can play Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA V5 via the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S backwards compatibility feature. (Although GTA 5 is also getting a fully optimised re-release for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2021).
