The Game Awards will once again return this year, this time near the start of December. We also now know when The Game Awards 2022 is taking place.
The Game Awards have become the premier awards show for gaming in recent years. Hosted by Geoff Keighley, the show dishes out awards for all kinds of categories such as game of the year. It also serves as a showcase for new games, with trailers and advertisements between awards.
Now, we have confirmation that The Game Awards will return this year on Thursday, December 8th 2022. It’ll be streaming live around the world from Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. The news was announced by host Geoff Keighley on Twitter.
Keighley said “We have a date!”, then said “Hard to believe this is our ninth show. We’ve been working all year to bring you something very special.”
The Game Awards 2022 – a new category
We also learned recently that a new category has been added to this year’s show. The category is for the Best Adaptation. It’ll recognise creative media based on video games, such as TV shows, movies, books or comics.
For example, video game movies like the recent Sonic the Hedgehog or Uncharted movies could be eligible for an award. And as we know, there are more video game adaptations coming out than ever before, with countless projects in the works. So the competition for this award may end up being pretty fierce.
Geoff Keighley has also hosted other video game shows this year, including Summer Games Fest and the upcoming Gamescom Opening Night Live. That makes three separate shows he’s involved with – he certainly gets around.
It’ll be interested to see which games and other media are nominated at the show this year. Many people are expecting Elden Ring to take Game of the Year already, though competition could still arise later in the year. The first big gameplay trailer for the game was actually shown at Summer Games Fest last year, with Keighley hyping it up beforehand.
