The flick in question has been dubbed as a Resident Evil “origin” story. It will release in cinemas 3rd September 2021.

Directed by Johannes Roberts (47 Meters Down, The Strangers: Prey at Night), this new zombie-fest will star the likes of Kaya Scodelario as Claire Redfield, as well as Hannah John-Kamen as Jill Valentine.

Robbie Amell will also join the cast as Chris Redfield, alongside Tom Hopper as Albert Wesker, Avan Jogia as Leon S. Kennedy, and Neal McDonough as William Birkin [via Bloody Disgusting].

In a statement shared by Deadline, Roberts delved into how he plans to replicate the fantastic fear factor of the original games within his movies.

With this movie, I really wanted to go back to the original first two games and recreate the terrifying visceral experience I had when I first played them whilst at the same time telling a grounded human story about a small dying American town that feels both relatable and relevant to today’s audiences,” he said.

While the previous Resident Evil films were flashy and nonsensical, we might be about to get something which captures the essence of the original PS1 games. That being said, the original claustrophobic caper was more of a B-movie than a compelling cinema-piece. Roberts has a careful balance to strike when it comes to replicating the experience!

It goes without saying that, thanks to the global pandemic, it’s hard to predict what cinemas will be like in a few months’ time. Maybe we’ll see the Resident Evil movie reboot with the same release date in cinemas as on streaming services.

It looks like the next couple of years are going to be bursting at the scenes with video game adaptations. Not only do we have the likes of The Last of Us being transformed for TV, but we also have a new Mortal Kombat film on the way, as well as the highly anticipated blockbuster Uncharted.

Are you looking forward to the Resident Evil movie reboot?
