The director of the recently announced new Witcher game has promised that there will be no crunch on the game.
After the announcement of a brand new Witcher game, Gwent game director Jason Slama confirmed that he would be the director of the new game. “I am super thrilled to announce that I have humbly been working to ensure the success of the next big AAA The Witcher game as its Game Director!“ tweeted Slama.
While many fans are of course excited for a new Witcher game, there are people who are also understandably very sceptical. Back in 2019, studio co-founder Marcin Iwiński admitted that they want to treat people in a more humane way in response to a question about crunch at the company. But it’s still unclear how culture might have changed at the company.
“never on my watch”
So of course, one Twitter user quote tweeted Slama about crunch at the company. In response to this, Slama tweeted “Never on my watch!” It’s best to take this sentiment with a grain of salt. Crunch is pretty much rampant across the games industry. And unless Slama ensures that firm measures are put in place to prevent it, he cannot guarantee crunch won’t happen.
It’s good that he didn’t simply ignore the criticism, but it’s probably better to remain apprehensive. Though in an interview with IGN, Slama did note that “you can make a high quality CCG without murdering the people who work on it with whips and chains.” So Maybe there is reason to be hopeful with him as director.
For now though, we will just have to wait and see how the development of the new Witcher game, crunch or no crunch, turns out. All we know about it so far is that it exists, and that it seems to be teasing a new Witcher school.
