Ubisoft Thinks Gamers Don’t Understand NFTs

Ubisoft has responded to the general backlash that Ubisoft Quartz, the studio’s take on NFTs, and what they think about it.

Nicolas Pouard, VP at Ubisoft’s Strategic Innovations Lab, and the one in charge of Ubisoft Quartz, recently spoke with Finder about their approach to NFTs, and player responses to them.

“Well, it was a reaction we were expecting,” said Pouard on the backlash they received regarding Ubisoft Quartz. “We know it’s not an easy concept to grasp. But Quartz is really just a first step that should lead to something bigger. Something that will be more easily understood by our players.”

Pouard continued to explain that they would continue to add features, and that “piece by piece” NFTs will be understood by players. But the VP also said he doesn’t think gamer understand the supposed benefits of NFTs.

“I think gamers don’t get what a digital secondary market can bring to them. For now, because of the current situation and context of NFTs, gamers really believe it’s first destroying the planet, and second just a tool for speculation. But what we [at Ubisoft] are seeing first is the end game. The end game is about giving players the opportunity to resell their items once they’re finished with them or they’re finished playing the game itself.”

The entire interview is well worth a read, but one that is also frustrating. Pouard’s opinion that gamers don’t get NFTs is an insulting one. Many do understand them, but consider them first of all pointless, but most importantly, environmentally damaging.

Pouard acknowledged that there is an environmental factor, and that they are looking into how to take the right steps regarding being environmentally friendly. But Ubisoft are jumping on the trend now, when the majority of NFTs do cause damage. Rather than waiting until they are environmentally friendly.

It’s also important to note that the majority of the gaming industry just doesn’t want NFTs. On top of that, Ubisoft Quartz hasn’t even been successful with its NFTs. Hopefully more studios will cut them out sooner, as nobody wants them.
