October and November are usually the busy months for video game releases, but September 2021 is shaping up to be quite busy itself. No matter which platform you’re rocking, there’ll likely be plenty for you to sink your teeth into this month. Here’s a list of all the biggest new and upcoming game releases for September 2021
Sonic Colours Ultimate – September 7th
Fans of Sonic can relive the 201 adventure, Sonic Colours, when the Ultimate edition drops on September 7th. Originally released on the Nintendo Wii, the game sees Sonic tour Dr. Eggman’s outerspace theme park with a bunch of brightly coloured Wisps.
The remastered treatment is being provided by Blind Squirrel Entertainment. That’s the same team that provided the Mass Effect games with a recent lick of modern paint. Releasing on the Nintendo Switch and new gen consoles, Sonic Colours Ultimate will feature several gameplay enhancements and refined controls. You expect to find 4K visuals on the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions, too.
Unfortunately, the game will only be available digitally in Europe. That’s apparently due to ‘unforeseen logical issues’. It looks like we won’t be getting one of those adorable Baby Sonic keyrings afterall.
Life is Strange: True Colors – September 10th
The third mainline entry in the Life is Strange series is finally arriving this month. True Colors introduces us to completely new characters with their own unique powers. Time travel and Telekinesis are out the door – this time, the power of Empathy takes centre stage.
True Colors keeps the episodic nature of the Life is Strange series, but all of the episodes are releasing at once this time around. No more waiting several months to resolve cliff hangers!
It’s been a while since the last Life is Strange game, and many fans might be looking for a refresher on the story. A remastered collection of the previous games was supposed to release alongside True Colors, but has since been delayed to early next year. Fret not, though – we’ve compiled a short recap of what you need to know before playing Life is Strange: True Colors.
It’s set to release across PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC. A prequel DLC that dives deeper into some of the characters is also set to release on September 30th.
Deathloop – September 14th
Perhaps the standout release for September, Deathloop is the latest project to come out of Arkane Studios. You might remember them from the likes of Dishonored and Prey – you know, some of the best immersive sims ever made?
Arkane’s hook this time is a mind-bending time loop mechanic that traps protagonist Colt Vahn on the island of Blackreef. Your goal will be to break out of the constant cycle. To achieve this, Colt will need to take out eight unique targets, all within one time loop. Using a variety of punchy weapons and abilities, Arkane’s emergent gameplay will likely be on show here.
All the while, Colt will have a price on his own head. The assassin Julliana will hunt you down on your adventures, making every time loop different from the last. It’s safe to say that this is high up on a lot of people’s wish lists this year. We can’t wait to see more of Deathloop when it releases on PS5 and PC on September 14th.
Sable – September 23rd
Turning towards the end of the month, September is looking pretty stacked. The indie title Sable is set to finally release after players have rinsed the early demo as much as humanly possible.
With an utterly stunning art style, Sable certainly stands out from the crowd. It’s up to you to explore a barren desert world, completing puzzles and 3D platforming sections along the way. From the trailers, it sounds as though it will have a belter of a soundtrack to boot, too.
This one is set to launch across PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
Death Stranding: Directors Cut – September 24th
Not quite had enough of Death Stranding yet? Prepare yourself to dive back into the weird and wonderful mind of Hideo Kojima when his Directors Cut drops on September 24th.
Only available on the PlaySation 5, this updated version of Death Stranding adds a plethora of new features that never made it into the original game. There are all sorts of new gadgets and structures to play around with. Our favourite is the pair of robot legs that can now carry around additional cargo for you. It’s adorable!
For a full rundown of what else is featured in Death Stranding: Directors Cut, give our rundown a read. This new game won’t be available on PS4, but an upgrade is purchasable for those who own the original. Save files can carry over, too.
Lost Judgment – September 24th
The sequel to 2018’s successful Yakuza spin-off is also releasing on September 24th. Following on from the story in the first game, you’ll play as Takayuki Yagami, a street-wise detective.
Lost Judgment promises all new cases to crack in a game that marries a grim narrative with action gameplay. Unlike the more recent Yakuza: Like A Dragon game, the gameplay isn’t turn-based.
A remastered version of the first Judgment game released earlier this year. That version brought an overhauled lighting system to the game on PS5. It’s now also playable at 60fps. It’s a great refresher for when the sequel launches later this month.
Outer Wilds: Echoes of the Eye – September 28th
Lastly, there’s the hotly anticipated DLC expansion for Outer Wilds. Those who’ve played Outer Wilds will likely be wondering how DLC for this game could even work. It’s me – I’m the person wondering.
Nevertheless, we’ll surely find out more when the expansion releases on September 28th. The trailer seems to showcase brand new environments with a new mystery to uncover. Several questions remain unanswered, though. Will there be additional planets to explore? Will the time loop mechanic return? I’m excited to find out.
