The creator of The Walking Dead series wants to turn upcoming horror game The Callisto Protocol into a multimedia franchise.
The Callisto Protocol was announced at The Game Awards in December 2020. It’s to be developed by a new studio called Striking Distance Studios and is fronted by Glen Schofield, a former lead Call of Duty developer and the creator of the Dead Space series.
Striking Distance has also partnered with Skybound Entertainment, the company behind the massive The Walking Dead franchise, and which was founded by Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman. As noted by VGC, Skybound has huge plans for The Callisto Protocol.
Beyond being a new survival horror video game brand, Skybound Entertainment wants to help bring The Callisto Protocol franchise into the world of TV, books, merchandise and more.
Kirkman, the chairman of Skybound Entertainment and creator of The Walking Dead said: “Through Skybound, The Walking Dead has expanded from its original comic book to multiple television series, books, video games, merchandise, and more, and we can’t wait to explore similar possibilities for The Callisto Protocol with Skybound’s multiplatform expertise.”
The Callisto Protocol is set on a prison colony on Jupiter’s moon in the year 2320. It’s unclear what ties it may or may not have to the Dead Space series, but oddly it’s apparently set in the same universe as PUBG, despite being a very different game.
The Callisto Protocol is currently set to release for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2022.
