Call of Duty: Warzone is one of 2020’s must-play games, and the future of the longstanding franchise is looking more promising than ever before. Developer Infinity Ward hasn’t stopped pumping out new content for the free-to-play Battle Royale game since it launched in March, but it seems that Warzone might be even more important than we thought.
According to a new interview with Infinity Ward’s studio narrative director Taylor Kurosaki, Warzone will tie together a lot of the future Call of Duty games.
Speaking with GamerGen [via VGC], Kurosaki explained just how Warzone has made the team “rethink” CoD as a whole.
“We’re in kind of uncharted territories here,” he said. “Call of Duty has been on a very regular cadence for many, many years, and Warzone has made us rethink exactly how best to release new content and how to integrate it.
“Call of Duty is a genre in itself. There are different branches in the Call of Duty tree, but they’re all connected in some ways.”
He went on to add: “Warzone will be the through-line that connects all of the different various sub-franchises of Call of Duty. It’s going to be really cool to see how the different sub-franchises sort of come in and out of focus, but Warzone will be the one constant.”
The game is now into its third Season, which recently came along with a 15 GB update that’s packed to the brim with hints about where Warzone is headed to next.
As discussed over on the ModernWarzone subreddit [via VGC], it’s noted that no less than 13 (!!) game modes have been located within the game files of the new update.
These reportedly include a “classic Battle Royale” mode, which looks like it’ll get rid of the Gulag, respawns, cash and loadouts for a more typical BR experience. Other modes bear names like “BYOL,” which looks like it’ll allow you to start with our own custom loadout. “Non Stop” mode has also been spotted, and it looks like it’ll see the gas circle closing in throughout the entire match.
