Worms NFT Project Cancelled Due To Heavy Negative Reception

Team17 has cancelled the Worms NFT project after almost unanimous backlash, and numerous associated studios speaking out against NFTs.

About 24 hours after they were first announced, Team17 has officially announced that they are cancelling the Worms NFT project. “Team17 is today announcing an end to the MetaWorms NFT project,” said the studio in a statement. “We have listened to our teamsters, development partners, and our games’ communities, and the concerns they’ve expressed, and have therefore taken the decision to step back from the NFT space”

Numerous developers associated with Team17 called out the plans, and had no idea they were happening in the first place. The official Overcooked Twitter released a statement saying that they “don’t support NFTs” and that they “carry too great an environmental and social cost.” And Going Under developer Aggro Crab released a similar, albeit slightly more angry response to the news. “We believe NFTs cannot be environmentally friendly, or useful,” said Aggro Crab, “and really are just an overall fucking grift.” Aggro Crab also said they would no longer be working with Team17 on future titles.

Later, Yooka-Laylee developer Playtonic also released a brief statement saying they have no interest in NFTs. The general negative response was clearly overwhelmingly negative.

News of the cancellation of the project produced a mixture of responses in the official MetaWorms Discord. One user used a slur to derogatorily refer to those who are rightly criticising the project. And many others referred to those critics as ‘trolls’, despite once again, everyone having a valid reason to be critical.

This whole situation is a reminder that pretty much no one wants NFTs. Ubisoft is currently the only major studio to have released NFTs (and are continuing to do so despite again, no one wanting them). Whereas in many other cases, developers have cancelled their NFT plans due to overwhelming backlash.
