Xbox Boss Thinks PlayStation Game Pass ‘Is The Right Answer’

Head of Xbox Phil Spencer believes that PlayStation making a Game Pass competitor is “an inevitability.”

Spencer was recently interviewed by IGN, where he spoke about the rumours of PlayStation’s take on Game Pass.

“As you know, so many of these things actually intertwine with themselves,” said Spencer. “From [backwards compatibility] in terms of a way of building out a library of games that we have shipping on PC and console simultaneously […] knowing that Game Pass is gonna come and we wanna bring Game Pass to multiple platforms – all of these decisions kind of stack on top of themselves.”

“I don’t mean it to sound like we’ve got it all figured out,” continued Spencer, “but I think the right answer is allowing your customers to play the games they wanna play, where they wanna play them, and giving them choice about how they build their library, and being transparent with them about what our plans are in terms of our PC initiatives and our cross-gen initiatives and other things.

“So when I hear others doing things like Game Pass or coming to PC, it makes sense to me because I think that’s the right answer.”

But Spencer doesn’t see PlayStation also going the Game Pass route as proof they were right to do it so early. More it shows him that that was always where the industry was headed. “”I don’t really look at it as validation. I actually, when I’m talking to our teams, I talk about it as an inevitability.

what is spartacus?

Game Pass has been an incredibly successful strategy for Xbox. While many studios were hesitant at first, there are regularly many titles that come to the service on release day. So it makes sense that PlayStation would be working on their own take on Game Pass.

Currently titled Spartacus, PlayStation’s version of Game Pass is expected to launch sometime this Spring. It’s believed to blend PS Plus and PS Now into one subscription service. And it would be priced at different tiers, giving you access to PS1, PS2, PS3, and PSP games on the highest tier.

Earlier today, Microsoft announced controversial publisher Activision-Blizzard had been acquired by the Xbox brand.
