BioShock 4 Will Have Open-World Setting, According To Job Listing

The next BioShock game (which we’ll call BioShock 4, for now) could feature an open-world setting, according to a recent job listing posted by developer Cloud Chamber.

Traditionally, BioShock has featured a small but explorable dystopian playpen, one that houses the series’ twisted plot turns and narrative. However, the next instalments’ developer, Cloud Chamber, is seemingly on the hunt for a senior writer who can “bring BioShock to life once again” within an “open world” environment.

Here’s a snippet of the job listing from the developer’s site:

“Cloud Chamber is looking for a Senior Writer to join our talented Narrative team to bring the world of BioShock to life once again. Under the supervision of the Lead Writer, and collaborating closely with the Narrative and Design teams, our Senior Writer will craft memorable narrative arcs, write dialogue, and breathe life into our characters. Experience in writing for games, with a particular aptitude for managing the nuances of interactive storytelling, would be ideal for this role. We’re hoping to find someone who can weave impactful, character-driven stories in an open world setting.”

Previous Cloud Chamber job postings have also suggested that the game will feature a Fallout-style dialogue system alongside an open-ended level design.

The game also seemingly won’t be taking players to either Rapture or Columbia, which means BioShock 4 will likely have its own twisted utopia to explore. The series’ creator, Kev Levine, previously stated that the next BioShock had “entered the later stages” of development. However, it’s likely the project has been delayed somewhat by the ongoing pandemic situation.

Hopefully, we’re about to see something new from the BioShock saga. While the original game’s entrapped setting is a perfect commercial hellscape, perhaps the game’s premise can spread its wings a little with new technology.

Personally, I’d love to see the game use a similar style to that of Metro Exodus, which features open but contained levels to survive within.
