A game based on Marvel’s Black Panther is reportedly in the works at EA.
This was hinted at by Jeff Grubb, a games journalist who regularly leaks information like this. He claims the game will be a single-player-only title, hoping to build on the success EA found with Jedi: Fallen Order. That game was developed by Respawn, also known for Apex Legends and Titanfall.
Details are scarce, but Grubb says the Black Panther game is in very early development at the moment. That means it’s likely we won’t see it for a while -if it’s actually real. With that, we should take this all with a grain of salt.
In the game, players will apparently be trying to take on the mantle of Black Panther after the death of the previous one. Players will need to take on different challenges to rise to the position of Black Panther. Unlike some superheroes, the Black Panther is more of a title/position than an individual character.
What else do we know?
The game is being referred to at EA as Project Rainier, possibly named after Mount Rainier in Washington. EA’s new Seattle studio is said to be working on development of the game. Former Monolith Productions boss, Kevin Stephens, is heading the studio after previously working on the Middle-Earth games.
After his work on Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War, it makes sense that he’d be tasked with creating a new single-player title. If true, the reported Black Panther game would arguably be a welcome fit with that wealth of development experience.
But how committed are EA to making this game worthwhile? They’ve not had a great track record of single-player titles in recent years, and have publicly made fun of players who play them. Hopefully, that’s in the past and this game will be one of the good ones.
