Cyberpunk 2077 is getting a Game of the Year Edition in 2023, over two years after it was originally released in 2020.
When Cyberpunk 2077 launched for PC, PS4 and Xbox One on December 10th, 2020, it’s fair to say that it launched with a lot of problems. While the PC version had its fair share of issues, the game on PS4 or Xbox One faired much worse.
Sony pulled the game from the PS Store
In fact, the game was considered so bad that Sony pulled it from the PS Store only for it to return about six months later. When Cyberpunk 2077 was relaunched on the PS Store, the game was considered to be in a better state.
However, it was still far from perfect. Yet its new-gen port which arrived in February 2022, proved to be somewhat of a success.
Thankfully, with the release of the Edgerunners update which launched in conjunction with the Cyberpunk anime series on Netflix, the CDPR sci-RPG seemingly made a triumphant comeback.
CDPR claimed that over one million players had been playing Cyberpunk 2077 every day during the launch week of the Edgerunners update.
Furthermore, CD Projekt Red also announced the first and perhaps only major expansion for Cyberpunk 2077, The Phantom Liberty. The expansion is set to release in 2023.
2023 could be a great year for Cyberpunk 2077
As reported by PC Gamer (via Insider Gaming), CDPR CEO Adam Kiciński announced during a recent investor call that Cyberpunk 2077 is getting a Game of the Year Edition in 2023.
“It’s a natural order of things,” Kiciński said. “It was the same with The Witcher 3, which after both expansions was finally released as a Game of the Year Edition and has been operating on the market ever since. The same can be expected in this case. It’s quite obvious.”
It does feel strange that Cyberpunk 2077 is getting a Game of the Year Edition in 2023. Sure, despite its launch issues, Cyberpunk 2077 won some GOTY awards. However, that would have been in 2020, perhaps 2021 at the latest.
Is it really just an Ultimate Edition?
I don’t blame CDPR for celebrating the re-launch of the game following the Edgerunners update. That being said, bundled with The Phantom Liberty expansion, the Cyberpunk 2077: Game of the Year Edition feels like it should just be called an Ultimate Edition. In my opinion.
