Genshin Impact Developer Is Opening A Studio In Montreal

Genshin Impact developer miHoYo are reportedly planning to open a new studio in Montreal to develop a “new AAA open world action adventure game with shooter mechanics,” according to industry analyst Daniel Ahmad.

Ahmad posted a screenshot of a LinkedIn post the company released confirming the announcement. The new studio is set to be “a hub for research and development,” and will apparently hire 100+ employees over two years. The game will also be set in a “living, breathing paranormal world.” Ahmad also noted that miHoYo currently has over 3500 employees already. He also noted how the company has grown from three people in 2014, to 1500 in 2020, to 3500+ as it stands.

Apparently the open world AAA shooter has been in development for sometime, at least since 2019. No other specific details have been provided about the game at this point in time. It’s likely the game will follow in the footsteps of Genshin Impact. The fact it’s open world means it will probably be a similar game. The main design difference likely being the combat mechanics.

Genshin Impact is obviously a huge hit. The game made $2 billion in its first year. It also reached 23 million downloads in its first week. So with the success of Genshin Impact, its unsurprising miHoYo wants to open a studio in Montreal. The company already has studios and offices in Japan, South Korea, Singapore, the US and now Canada. So furthering their output now seems like the perfect time to do so.
