Destiny fulfilled!

It’s official, Bungie is now owned by Sony

It is official, former Halo developer Bungie is now owned by Sony. Meaning the Destiny studio is now part of the Sony umbrella.

Two weeks after Microsoft began the process of acquiring Activision, Sony also began its process of acquiring the former Halo studio. At the time, the Bungie deal was said to be worth $3.6 billion.

However, following the proposed acquisition of Bungie, some fans were concerned that the likes of Destiny and other upcoming titles would be exclusive to PlayStation.

Bungie won’t be exclusive, apparently

When asked in February whether future Bungie titles would be exclusive to PlayStation, Bungie simply replied: “No“.

Furthermore, Bungie added: “We want the worlds we are creating to extend to anywhere people play games. We will continue to be self-published, creatively independent, and we will continue to drive one, unified Bungie community.

However, Sony has now announced that the acquisition is finalised and the studio is now officially part of its family.

The agreement to acquire Bungie has closed. So now we can officially say… welcome to the PlayStation family,” tweeted PlayStation.

What does this mean for Sony and Bungie?

At this time, no one outside of Sony and Bungie really knows for sure. If Destiny and future Bungie titles are to remain multiplatform with cross-progression, this deal is simply about making as much money as possible.

If the likes of Destiny continue to be played on multiple platforms, Sony and Bungie will want to recoup as much money as possible. Whether that be on PlayStation, PC as well as Xbox or perhaps even one day, Nintendo.

Furthermore, it wouldn’t surprise me if PlayStation has exclusive DLC, whether it’s permanent exclusivity or over a set period of time.
