Santa Monica Studio has released an “enhanced performance” PS5 patch for God of War, according to the studio’s official Twitter account.
The patch will enable God of War to run with increased performance on PS5 when playing using backwards compatibility. Not only is the update free, but it also cranks the game’s frame rate up to 60fps and enables a 4K “checkerboard” resolution.
Santa Monica also made the following statement via its official blog: “On the PlayStation 4 Pro version of God of War (2018), you have a choice between two graphics modes: one that favors performance and one that favors resolution.
“Coming to you tomorrow on February 2nd, we will be releasing a free patch that replaces the current video graphics mode option with a new default setting that will offer the best of both performance and resolution to our PlayStation 5 players!”
The aforementioned “checkerboard” resolution is a trick used by the likes of the PS4 Pro to achieve 4K. It does this by only rendering half the screen at a time, giving games a faux 4K look. Enabling this on the PS5 means that players will be able to choose how their experience.
God of War is one of the many PS4 games available through the PlayStation Plus collection, along with the likes of Bloodborne, Resident Evil Biohazard and Crash Bandicoot N-Sane Trilogy. While it’s unclear how many of these games will receive the PS5 patch treatment, Sony will probably wants its own titles to look and play at their best on the hardware.
Just recently, we caught wind of rumours surrounding plans for a similar patch for The Last of Us Part 2, enhancing its performance on PS5. While these rumours are simply hearsay, for now, it would make sense for the game to be supported on PS5, especially since it has won over 260 awards!
