PlayStation Backward Compatibility May About To Be Expanded

Sony updates its PlayStation backward compatibility patent, and it has got fans speculating once more. But what does it mean?

As brought to our attention by industry analyst Shaun McIlroy, Sony has once again updated its patent for PlayStation backward compatibility. It’s probably not as exciting as it seems. However, there’s a chance it might be something more.

The PlayStation backward compatibility patent was first filled in 2015 by the smooth-talking, PS4 and PS5 architect, Mark Cerny. Over the years Sony has offered backward compatibility with almost every console. For example, the PS2 could play PS1 games, and depending on the console model, the PS3 could play both PS1 and PS2 games.

Sadly, this feature would discontinue the PlayStation 4. However, the feature would return with the PlayStation 5 being able to play PS4 games. Many Sony fans have looked upon in disappointment at the far superior backwards compatibility of the Xbox brand. So much so, that fans would love to see full backwards compatibility introduced in PlayStations most modern era.

What does this all mean?

Well, it could mean a number of things. It could be that Sony intends to improve on its backwards compatibility with the PS5. Perhaps it may even bring it to the PS4. However, it could mean very little. It is possible that Sony might just be protecting its patent and nothing more.

That being said, if we were to be somewhat optimistic, maybe Sony intends to bring back full backward compatibility with the rumoured overhaul of the PS Plus and PS Now subscription services.

At this time, all we can do is speculate on the rumours. Yet, with the next State of Play rumoured to take place early next month, maybe all will be revealed sooner rather than later. Watch this space.
