During an interview with Russian media outlet TASS, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan has claimed that PS5 consoles have “absolutely” sold out worldwide.
Before the PlayStation 5 released, both Sony and Microsoft tried to ease concerns of any would-be buyers that there would be plenty of next-gen consoles in stock and while supplies were expected to sell out at launch, restocks would be quite plentiful.
However with the global pandemic causing havoc throughout the year, living up to the promise of maintaining stock was a tough ask to uphold. Right now both the PS5 and Xbox Series X are incredibly difficult to get hold of, with supplies expected to be short going into 2021.
When asked during the interview with TASS whether the PS5 had truly sold out, CEO Jim Ryan replied: “absolutely everything is sold.“
Obviously the PS5 selling-out worldwide comes as no surprise, especially if you’re trying to get your hands on one right now.
Jim Ryan also spoke about the challenges faced launching a new-gen console during a global pandemic.
“Of all the things that I’ve learned this year, one is that I wouldn’t plan on doing another big console launch in the midst of a global pandemic,” said Ryan.
The CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment continued: “It’s been difficult, it’s been challenging from the production side, not being able to get anybody into the factories in Asia.”
During the launch of the PS5, Jim Ryan has been doing the media rounds and during his conversations with TASS he also revealed that Sony has plans to counter the ever-growing success of Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass despite the existence of PS Now.
