Sony has warned that the ongoing PS5 stock shortage will continue into 2022, according to Bloomberg.
Commenting on the situation, Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki stated that the company is still struggling to keep up with consumer demands [via Eurogamer]:
“I don’t think demand is calming down this year and even if we secure a lot more devices and produce many more units of the PS5 next year, our supply wouldn’t be able to catch up with demand.”
Hiroki then added that his supply fears are based on the company’s current market share and historic hardware sales:
“We have sold more than 100m units of the PlayStation 4 and considering our market share and reputation, I can’t imagine demand dropping easily,”
As you’re probably well aware, PS5 stock is incredibly scarce. While some PlayStation fans have managed to get a hold of a console, many are still waiting with bated breath. Sadly, based on Totoki’s suspicions, it now seems like PS5 stock will be limited for the rest of the year.
Of course, Sony’s PlayStation shortage isn’t just a symptom of consumer demand. The company has also experienced difficulty when it comes to manufacturing the next-gen system, thanks to an ongoing semi-conductor shortage. The console has also been targeted by resellers, who have been using auto-buying bots in order to snag available stock.
It’s worth mentioning that despite Sony’s PS5 stock woes, the company has benefited from the console’s success. Not only does the PS5 now hold the titles of the fastest-selling console in US history, but it also sold 7.8 units during its first fiscal year.
Hopefully, the PS5’s stock situation will improve this year, even if just a little. While Sony doesn’t seem confident that it will, the company is apparently planning on redesigning the console to speed up manufacturing.
