An update to the Resident Evil Village Steam page has seemingly confirmed that the game will have multiplayer in some form.

Ahead of this Thursday’s Resident Evil Showcase, it seems that Capcom has changed the game’s Steam page to now include the tag “multiplayer”, a change that has been identified via steamdb.info [via bioharardcast.com].
While the update has not yet been processed through Steam’s databases, it should be visible shortly.

Capcom also recently announced that it plans to beta test some sort of multiplayer Resident Evil project. No details were provided in terms of what game the project actually means.
Needless to say, the Resident Evil Showcase event will likely answer a lot of our questions. As the event intends to reveal gameplay footage to fans, it’d make sense if this includes multiplayer details.
That being said, the showcase also claims to have “more Resident Evil news” to reveal, so there’s every chance that these multiplayer rumours could be related to a separate project.
Multiplayer has existed in the Resident Evil franchise as far back as the PS2. Games like the Outbreak series featured both online play and split-screen co-op.
Since then, various Resident Evil titles have had some sort of multiplayer, Resident Evil 7 skipped multiplayer in favour of a solely single player experience.
It’s hard to tell exactly how Village would make use of multiplier with its story. It’s the direct sequel to RE 7, which featured a lone protagonist in a state of solitary survival.
A previous (and unconfirmed) leak claimed that Resident Evil Village will have a battle royale mode, though little has been said about this since.

That being said, it’s not uncommon for games to feature a multiplayer mode unconnected to the game’s story. We’ve seen this in AAA titles like Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us. This could be an easy way of providing some multiplayer fun while still maintaining the terrifying ambience created by surviving alone.
Regardless of all of this, Resident Evil Village is shaping up to be stupid amounts of scary. The game is expected to launch sometime this year, so perhaps we’ll get a release date soon.
Are you looking forward to Resident Evil Village’s multiplayer, or does the idea fill you with the wrong kind of fear?
