Popular streamer Shroud has revealed why he believes that Cyberpunk 2077 won’t be able to topple GTA 5 from its throne during its first week of sales.
For better or worse, bugs and glitches aside, there is little denying that Cyberpunk 2077 has already proven to be a commercial success from developers CD Projekt Red.
Despite all the bugs and glitches, after nearly a decade of the hype train steamrolling through the video game industry, reports have revealed that after day one Cyberpunk 2077 has already turned in a profit.
To be fair, the reason that Shroud gave as to why he believes Cyberpunk 2077 won’t dethrone GTA 5 is quite an obvious one: name recognition.
In a Twitch stream Shroud expressed his thoughts on the success of Cyberpunk 2077 compared to the giant that is GTA 5.
“GTA 5 is known across the world. Grand Theft Auto, that was hype right?” said Shroud. “GTA 6 is going to be equally as hype, you know? I don’t know if Cyberpunk can beat that, but there’s a chance.”
Shroud continued: “But I doubt it, man. GTA is like, known. My Grandma knows GTA, you know what I mean? That’s the best thing you can say when you’re talking about games. If your grandma knows it, then you’re good. Your grandma can figure it out? You’re good.”
The GTA franchise is the biggest in the world of video games and has been building its name ever since it released for the original PlayStation in 1997, arguably setting a new standard in the open-world genre with GTA 3 in 2001.
For any game to ever truly compete with the likes of the GTA franchise is a massive uphill task. However that’s not to say that Cyberpunk 2077 hasn’t already gotten off to a promising start (at least financially) because it most certainly has.
However I would take any initial sale numbers for Cyberpunk 2077 lightly at this time because judging by the recent apology by CD Projekt Red, as many sales as the game generates, there will also be a high number of returns from unhappy gamers.
Over the next week or when all the dust has settled we’ll no doubt learn of the true commercial success of Cyberpunk 2077
