Sony has said that it is interested in helping Bungie turn its franchises into movies in its most recent investor earnings call.
While not as big an acquisition as Activision Blizzard, Sony acquiring Bungie still had people wondering what it meant for the Destiny 2 developer. Ultimately it turned out to be about funding Bungie projects. Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki even noted the other areas that Sony can help Bungie out in. “[It’s] not just for [the] gaming area, but the multi-using of IP and merchandising of IP – like a game title maybe put into movies,” said Totoki.
“Bungie want to nurture the IP they have in a multi-dimensional manner, and that’s their hope. For that, we believe we can help that – we have [Sony] Pictures and [Sony] Music, and Bungie can leverage our platform so that their IP can flourish and grow big.”
The mention of Sony Music is possibly an odd one, unless Bungie is thinking of writing a Cayde-6 album. But turning Destiny into a multimedia franchise doesn’t sound like an awful idea. The series is rife with interesting characters you can pull from. And it has extensive lore to work with too, so maybe a Destiny movie could be on the cards.
It’s very possible that Sony saw Microsoft developing a Halo series, and felt like it wanted something similar. Obviously the Uncharted film finally arrives this month, but that was stuck in development hell for years. So a franchise they can more quickly get off the ground would be a big boon for Sony.
Sony also noted that future Bungie titles won’t be PlayStation exclusives. As mentioned, the acquisition was more about Sony being in a better position to fund prospective projects. And PlayStation boss Jim Ryan also said we can expect more acquisitions further down the line.
