Xbox One No Longer In Production To Focus On New Consoles

According to a new report, Microsoft quietly discontinued the production of all Xbox One consoles at the end of last year. The news doesn’t come as too much of a shock, considering the relative success of the Xbox Series X/S so far, which are the fastest selling consoles in the company’s history.

Microsoft confirmed the news in a statement to The Verge earlier today: “To focus on production of Xbox Series X/S, we stopped production for all Xbox One consoles by the end of 2020,” said Cindy Walker, the senior director of Xbox console product marketing.

Interestingly, this news arrives only a few days after Sony publicly committed to producing more PS4 consoles. This was in response to the ongoing shortage of PS5s. Due to global supply chain issues, chip shortages and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, both consoles have been notoriously difficult to get hold off.

Fortunately, Microsoft has been able to better meet the demand for the cheaper Xbox Series S. The console is currently in stock across a number of places, and is the more popular of the two consoles. It outsold its counterpart in a number of key markets as of November last year. The console is also easier to produce for Microsoft, which is why it’s stock levels remain so high.

Microsoft launched the Xbox One in 2013. After a rocky start, thanks to some questionable marketing, the console performed well, especially with the release of the Xbox One S in 2016 and the continued growth of the Xbox Game Pass service. In its eight years of production, it’s estimated that Microsoft sold over 51 millions Xbox One consoles globally.

In other news, the first-person horror and shooter title, Stalker 2 has been delayed by seven months. Rumours of the delay were flying around the internet over the past few day. The development team confirmed the delay in a social media post yesterday.
