Crystal Dynamics has announced its ownership of the Tomb Raider as well as The Legacy of Kain IPs. Happy days!
Earlier in the year, Square Enix sold some of its most popular IPs for $300 million to Embracer Group. While $300 million is an eye-watering amount by just about anyone’s standards, in terms of the IP acquisitions, it can be considered a steal.
Embracer Groups has been on a spree!
It meant that Embracer Group owns the rights to Tomb Raider, The Legacy of Kain, Deus Ex and much more. Embracer Group has been on an epic spending spree and even acquired the rights to The Lord of the Rings.
However, Crystal Dynamics has now announced its ownership of the Tomb Raider and Legacy of Kain IPs from Square Enix following Embracer Group’s acquisition.
Crystal Dynamics now controls Tomb Raider
“We are excited to inform you that CD has taken control of several game franchises—including TOMB RAIDER and Legacy of Kain—from the games’ previous owner, Square Enix Limited,” announced the developer in a blog post.
It continued: “As a result of this change, Crystal Dynamics (or its affiliate) is now the owner of these games and the controller of the gameplay and personal data related to them. We look forward to taking this new and exciting journey with you!”
A new Tomb Raider has been announced
Recently, Crystal Dynamics announced that a new Tomb Raider game is in development and it will be powered by Unreal Engine 5.
However, its release is likely to be a few years away. Some have even speculated that the original game in the series might be getting another remake.
The last game to release in this series was Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and we said in our review that it was a “satisfying finale to the reboot trilogy.”
