EA debunks rumours of a possible takeover, for now

EA has debunked rumours of a possible takeover, suggesting that the company will remain independent. At least for now.

Earlier this year rumours were making the rounds that EA was looking to be acquired or was open to a possible merger with another company.

However, it seems that EA isn’t looking to be taken over for the time being. When speaking during a recent quarter financial earnings call, EA CEO Andrew Wilson told investors that the company wouldn’t be in a stronger position if acquired.

When questioned by investors on a possible takeover, Wilson told investors that Electronic Arts could “be in a stronger position as a standalone company.

“Our… objective is always to take care of our people, our players, and our shareholders,” continued Wilson. “Should there ever be a way for us to do that differently than the way we’re doing it today. I of course have to be open to that, but I would tell you today we feel very, very confident and excited for our future.

Will EA be acquired?

In recent months we’ve seen the likes of Microsoft begin the process of acquiring huge companies such as Bethesda and Activision Blizzard. Not to mention Sony’s acquisition of former Halo developer, Bungie. So, it wouldn’t come as much of a surprise if EA were the next big company to be taken over.

Will Electronic Arts be acquired by a company such as Microsoft or Sony? Only time will tell. It would certainly make for an interesting time if the likes of FIFA (soon to be EA Sports FC) were a console exclusive.

Furthermore, can you imagine subscription services such as EA Play being tied down to a single platform? In this day and age, seemingly nothing is impossible.
