Square Enix issues DMCA after Tomb Raider script leaks

Square Enix has issued a DMCA takedown after an alleged Tomb Raider script leaked on Patreon via the Sacred Symbols podcast.

The alleged name of the Tomb Raider script is “Project Jawbreaker”. It’s believed that Square Enix is using this script to help cast characters for the next Lara Croft adventure.

In 2018 we had the conclusion of the “Survivor Trilogy” with Shadow of the Tomb Raider. However, the leaked script is said to detail a new reboot featuring a more mature Lara Croft in her mid-30s.

Furthermore, the script also reveals that Ms Croft is looking to recruit a team of adventurers to help her overcome new challenges on her treasure-hunting escapades.

Ex-IGN journalist Colin Moriarty leads the Sacred Symbols podcast, and with the help of his co-hosts, they performed sections of the script for their paying Patreon members. Following this performance, Square Enix acted quickly in an attempt to remove all references to the alleged script.

Despite believing that the podcast acted within the laws of fair use, the Sacred Symbols hosts complied with Square Enix’s DMCA.

I was acting in the notion that this is fair use, this is general interest, this is of huge general interest, I didn’t break into Crystal Dynamics to steal it,” said Moriarty. However, while the audio of the script has been removed, it will still apparently exist in other locations. At least for the time being.

A new Tomb Raider is coming

In April this year, current Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics announced that it is working on a new game in the series, powered by Unreal Engine 5.

Furthermore, previous rumours claimed that the original game could receive a remake. However, those rumours conflict with recent reports of a reboot featuring Lara Croft and a team of adventurers.

In related news, earlier this year Square Enix revealed that it is selling off some of its prized studios. One of which includes Crystal Dynamics to Embracer Group. Once that deal concludes, the Tomb Raider licence will no longer be with Square Enix.
