THQ Nordic was seemingly teasing a remaster of 2002 classic TimeSplitters 2, but the publisher has now backtracked on the idea.

We’ve known for quite some time that ever since acquiring the rights to the TimeSplitters IP that we’ll be getting new releases in this beloved franchise.
Rumours were made apparent this time last year, suggesting there is a playable build of TimeSplitters 4 which is being developed by Dambuster Studios, the team who is also developing Dead Island 2.

However it’s a new tease (which is probably one of the most blatant teases that I’ve ever seen) which caught the internet’s eye, and it came via THQ Nordic’s Real-Time Strategy game, SpellForce 3: Fallen God.
Captured by the YouTube channel Beyond (check it out below), several in-game items were shown off within SpellForce 3: Fallen God, many of which relate to THQ IPs. References to the SpongeBob: SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom remaster, the Gothic Remake and the forthcoming Biomutant have all been spotted in-game.
This is where it gets interesting, as an in-game item relating to a TimeSplitters 2 remake (or remaster) caught peoples’ eyes. The description for the item is in French but it translates to “It’s finally coming!
“The iconic shooter, which has stood the test of time to join the era of modern games.” The in-game item is also branded with the TimeSplitters 2 box art.
Although that looks like fairly solid proof, a THQ spokesperson has now shot down rumours of a reboot or remaster. As noted by VGC, the spokesperson said: “The intention behind those easter eggs was pure fun. When Koch Media and Deep Silver are ready to talk about TimeSplitters, they will make sure to get heard.”
TimeSplitters 2, which was released on the PS2, OG Xbox and Nintendo GameCube, was considered to be the spiritual successor to the classic N64 title GoldenEye 007.
We did get a third game in the series with TimeSplitters 3 in 2005 and it was a fantastic game, it just wasn’t TimeSplitters 2.
However, just last year THQ Nordic hired the co-creator of TimeSplitters Steve Ellis who also worked on GoldenEye and Perfect Dark to work “on the future of the beloved series”.
Right now we’re not sure what’s going on, but let’s hope we get a new TimeSplitters game soon!
