GTA 6 Waiting Lobby

The best games like GTA for open world mayhem

Here’s the rest of our picks for the best games like GTA!

Saints Row: The Third Remastered

Love when GTA gets ridiculous? Then Saints Row: The Third promises – and delivers – on the zaniest parts of being in a criminal gang, throwing you into a turf war of caricature proportions in a series entry that establishes this isn’t just a simple GTA clone. Expectations are set immediately as you embark on an Ocean’s Eleven style heist (promoting a biopic about yourselves), and the game ups the ante with some truly ridiculous weapons. For your next jape, a new Saints Row is in the works, releasing in August 2022.

Games Like GTA just cause 4

Just Cause 4

Chaos at scale is the theme behind Just Cause 4, from the crazy weather to the private military antics to the literal Army of Chaos you create in the course of the game. One of the best games like GTA in terms of player freedom, Just Cause 4 is an enjoyable romp with a great soundtrack and very explorable map, but with none of the deeper nuance Rockstar’s franchise is praised for. The kind of game you fire up to have a laugh at the ragdoll physics.

Bully: Canis Canem Edit

Become a teen rebel in Bully: Canis Canem Edit, our second Rockstar pick for the list and arguably the greatest game ever set in a high school. Though it’s an older title – released in 2006 with a 2016 PS4 update – Bully is an essential when it comes to crime games, even if your misdeeds are more playing hooky instead of playing with hookers. The open world is small but rich, with plenty to do during a school day as Jimmy navigates the cliques that rule the academy. Sequel when?

Yakuza 0

Where it all began: Yakuza 0 is the prequel to this fan-favourite underworld franchise, charting the story of yakuza Kiryu and Majima and their rise and fall within their shifting Clan allegiances. The bubble-era Japan setting is glorious in its neon lights and cabaret bars, and Kiryu’s graphic dealings with street thugs feel as good as they always have. A must-play for fans of throwing bikes into people’s faces, Yakuza 0 is the perfect starting point to other entries in the franchise’s long history.

The Simpsons: Hit & Run

Often called the best video game tie-in ever (accurate), The Simpsons: Hit & Run is a hilarious parody of the genre, landing America’s most beloved family in hot Buzz Cola as they investigate suspicious activity in Springfield. An extremely popular game like GTA thanks to its at-the-time improvements on GTA III missions and car accessibility, Hit & Run plays like a dream almost 20 years later. Violence isn’t as much at the forefront of gameplay, but there is still a satisfying amount of destruction you can leave in your wake.
