The Best PS1 Games Of All Time

BEST PS1 GAMES OF ALL TIME: CONTINUED

Here’s the rest of our list of the best PS1 games of all time!

6. Final Fantasy 7

Although every Final Fantasy game on the Sony PlayStation was incredibly strong, it makes sense to give a shout out to the seventh game in the JRPG series. It was the first game in the series to switch to 3D character models, as well as using full motion video and a more realistic presentation for the series.

However, the biggest impact it had on gaming culture was due to its story, setting, and themes. For many, the success of the PlayStation is synonymous with Final Fantasy 7. That makes it one of the best PS1 games of all time.

7. Gran Turismo

The first Gran Turismo is brilliant as it settled the series’ identity as being a simulator rather than an arcade racer very early on. Graphically, the game looked gorgeous for the time and really set itself apart from other racers at time such as Ridge Racer and V-Rally (both of those are also great fun though).

However, it’s also a very strong title with regards to its buttery soundtrack, solid controls and variety in different cars to drive with. That makes it one of the best PS1 driving games.

8. Crash Bandicoot

If you’re a kid who grew up with a PS1 in the ‘90s, chances are you would have played at least the first level of Crash Bandicoot. As 3D graphics were beginning to take off, it made sense for a new platformer series to come along that emphasised depth in its movement, a direct contrast to the 2D side-scrollers that had dominated the games industry before then.

Its sheer difficulty makes it a great contender for one of the hardest platformer games too, and while it hasn’t aged as gracefully as it should, it remains a great entry to this list of the best PS1 games of all time.

9. Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee

When most games had switched to trying 3D, Oddworld Inhabitants decided to refuse that and then created one of the best platformers of the late 1990s. Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee follows the titular Abe, a labourer working for a meat processing factory who decides to escape the facility and liberate his fellow slaves. The enhanced power of the PlayStation meant that more detail could be shown on screen, which further emphasised the gritty, industrial aesthetics the game contained.

10. MediEvil

Speaking for myself personally, I place MediEvil at the very top of the best PS1 games of all time. It’s a comedy horror game set in a Tim Burton-esque world, where you play as a resurrected skeleton named Sir Daniel Fortesque who sets out to become a hero and save the world from the evil wizard Zarok.

Most of us will have played it on a demo disc back in 1999, and while it gets a fair shake due to its awkward platforming and camera controls, the game is certainly a great ride if you’re a fan of works like Beetlejuice, Nightmare Before Christmas, or any other classic comedy horror movies.
